SYMBIO – Shaping symbiosis in bio-based industrial ecosystems based on circular by-design supply chains
Powered by big data and artificial intelligence, SYMBIO shapes symbiotic business models with high profitability and sustainability replicable at the EU level to increase the market for bio-based products and provide a system to model, measure, and monitor symbiosis and its social, economic, and environmental impacts.
The SYMBIO methodology is designed and validated in 12 pilot regions of 6 EU countries (Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Spain, Belgium) where the industrial symbiosis is crucial for increasing the economic value of final products through the sharing of resources and zero-waste production models.
Accelerating industrial symbiosis guarantees local supply chains, minimizing the input of material resources and environmental impacts on soil, water and air quality, biodiversity and climate in all processes involved.
