Phos4You tests an innovative technology for P recovery

As part of the Interreg North West Europe project Phos4You, Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) and Greenskill Environmental Ltd., in collaboration with Scottish Water, have successfully tested an innovative microalgae technology for phosphorus recovery from wastewater, as part of their focus on technologies adapted to remote, rural and island locations in Scotland.

The extremophile microalgae Chlamydomonas acidophila have shown to have a high phosphorus and nitrogen uptake rates (up to 90%) whilst operating at low light intensities. The 500L photobioreactor has been tested at the Waste Water Development Center at Bo’ness managed by Scottish Water Horizon.
