Advances in bioelectrochemical systems for ammonium recovery

Further developments of the Run4Life project include the new publication of Diana Losantos of project partner Leitat and co-workers about the ‘Development and optimization of a bioelectrochemical system for ammonium recovery from wastewater as fertilizer’.

The authors describe that the obtained N–NH4+ removal efficiencies were higher at lower power consumption than with similar experiences reported in literature, and that the proposed system proved to be quite efficient for nitrogen recovery at a lower energy consumption compared to conventional nitrification/denitrification processes. Further tests with concentrated wastewaters are needed, for example with concentrated black water from vacuum toilets.

The proposed system is an appealing prospect in nitrogen recovery from wastewaters.
