RENURE: European breakthrough for circular agriculture
On 19 September 2025, the EU Nitrates Committee approved the use of RENURE (REcovered Nitrogen from manURE), a fertiliser made from processed manure that can safely replace chemical nitrogen fertilisers, under strict conditions:
- Max 80 kg N/ha/year
- Quality standards: free of heavy metals, strict composition control
- Restrictions: no livestock expansion
- National choice: only Member States opting in can adopt RENURE; requires national transposition
RENURE fertilisers – including ammonium salts (stripping-scrubbing), struvite, and mineral concentrates (RO) – allow farmers to replace chemical fertilisers, supporting:
- closed nutrient cycles
- reduced reliance on imported fertilisers
- circular and sustainable agriculture across Europe
Through the European Sustainable Nutrient Initiative (ESNI), coordinated by Biorefine Cluster Europe, RENURE has been monitored and promoted for years, showing how research, policy, and practice advance European circular nutrient management.
