BIOREFILL

The BIOREFILL project represented an operative strategy to boost local cooperation between academic institutions, research organizations and industrial companies operating in the field of biorefinery. To do so, the project made use of the well-developed biogas grid of the Lombardy region, which about 400 plants.

Objectives

  • Produce 2nd AND 3nd generation biomasses avoiding conflict with food production.
  • Boost technological innovation for energy production to reduce costs, increase crop production for biomass conversion and raise economic return.
  • Use waste from energy/biofuel production processes (treatment residues, i.e. CO2 from biomethane and nutrients from digestates) to produce 3rd generation biomass (microalgae).
  • Use anaerobic digestion as pre-treatment for the isolation of lignin residues to produce bioplastics and high added value chemicals from 3rd generation biomass.
  • Establish a recognized research team for the development of bio-refinery in the Lombardy region.
