SUBSCRIBE TO THE BULLETIN
Dear circular economy enthusiast,

With the new year just around the corner, December begins and a new issue of our Bulletin is back to keep you up to date with all the relevant news from our community.

This month we are happy to welcome AlgaeProBANOS in our network.This project, co-funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe programme, proposes to accelerate the development of algae products for a more sustainable future. Discover more about the AlgaeProBANOS below.

After the ESNI Conference in September and the launch of the ESNI Community, the community has now set up 4 Working Groups as core part of the initiative. These groups are led by European projects, discussing major challenges with an impact on the nutrient recycling and recovery. You can read more about it in this newsletter. The first webinar of the Technologies for Nutrient Recovery Group is coming to you on the 5th of December from 14:00 PM to 16:00 PM. Check below to find more information on the working groups.

Still, breaking news from several projects of our community will enrich your reading and make you aware of their latest developments and results.

And last but not least, do not forget to take a peek at publications and events we chose for you.

We wish you a pleasant reading!

 Biorefine community

The ESNI Community has established four Working Groups to address key challenges in nutrient recycling and recovery.

As core part of the initiative, the ESNI Community set up four Working Groups, led by European projects, discussing major challenges with an impact on the nutrient recycling and recovery. At present, the following Working groups are active:
  • Technologies for nutrient recycling coordinated by FERTIMANURE;
  • Agronomic performance of fertilising products coordinated by LEX4BIO;
  • Sustainability assessment coordinated by NOVAFERT;
  • Policy coordinated first by NUTRI2CYCLE and currently led by RENU2CYCLE.

The BioDEN project has released a new factsheet on the use of vacuum stripping to increase the biogas production from chicken manure.

Within the BioDEN project a new factsheet has been released on the use of vacuum stripping to increase the biogas production from chicken manure. The goal of the BioDEN project is to generate an additional income for biogas installations by extended valorisation of the digestate and additional biogas production.

FER-PLAY creates a new alternative fertilisers database.

FER-PLAY created a database that gathers the scattered knowledge on alternative fertilisers from seven different secondary raw materials (urban wastewater, industrial wastewater, sewage sludge, bio-waste, biological by-products, digestate, treated manure). Harmonised in a clear and comprehensive overview, it provides data and figures on 60 value chains and end products. The information considers the whole life cycle, from production to use and will be regularly updated throughout the project time with any additional information becoming available.

NUTRIKNOW explains the nitrogen cycle in their video: "Understanding Our Soil: The Nitrogen Cycle, Fixers, and Fertilizer."

What is the nitrogen cycle? It describes the fascinating journey of nitrogen from the air to the soil and back. Without nitrogen, plants cannot grow. Microbes also play a vital role in converting nitrogen into forms plants can use.

Yet, mismanagement can lead to environmental issues like water pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Smart nutrient practices help us balance the cycle for bountiful harvests and a healthier planet.

Watch the informative video on the nitrogen cycle here.

Model2Bio published a best practice flipbook on making the most of agri-food by-products.

How can we valorise potato peels, grape pomace, cheese whey and brewer’s spent grain in an economical and sustainable way? The Model2Bio project identified 10 different value chains, which together generate 10 products. These value chains are presented in a best practice brochure along with tips for fruitful collaboration between academia and industry as well as policy recommendations.

Revolutionising the Olive Industry: OLEAF4VALUE Unveils Market-Ready, Bio-Based Products from Olive Leaf Valorisation.

To commemorate the World Olive Tree Day, OLEAF4VALUE has developed an article on the revolutionising of the olive industry in which they unveil market-ready, bio-based products from olive leaf valorisation.

Olive leaves have been underutilized primarily due to limited awareness of their health benefits, overshadowed by the popularity of olives and olive oil in culinary traditions. There are many challenges in processing techniques, regulatory constraints, and limited research development and consumer awareness which also contribute to their infrautilization. In this article, OLEAF4VALUE dives deeper on the many reasons why revalorisation of olive leaves is crucial.

The two European sister projects FER-PLAY and NOVAFERT welcome the proposal for a Soil Monitoring Law.

The two European sister projects FER-PLAY and NOVAFERT welcome the proposal for a Soil Monitoring Law published on the 5th of July which is a first step towards achieving the goal of having all soils in healthy condition in Europe by 2050.

Given the level of soil degradation in Europe and its potential impacts, FER-PLAY and NOVAFERT propose a set of nine recommendations to be included in the Soil Monitoring Law.
