The second edition of the ManuREsource conference is coming soon! All international expertise on manure, gathered in one conference. What to expect? Clear policy views of several European countries who are dealing with manure surpluses, a scientific evaluation of existing and new techniques and a clear overview of the demand of organic fertilizers in Europe. The conference takes place on the 3th and 4th of December in the unique historical building ‘Het Pand’ in Ghent, Belgium. After the success of the first edition, with more than 200 participants, the organising partners University of Ghent, Inagro, the POM West Flanders and the Flemish Coordination Centre for Manure Processing (VCM vzw) expect a large attendance.

During the last 3 years, research, industry, authorities and civil society organizations cooperated within the framework of the BIOREFINE project to explore the opportunities for nutrient recovery and valorization from different waste streams. Up to now, the biorefinery concept is mainly focused on the production of energy and organic compounds from biomass. Therefore, the BIOREFINE project wanted to bring the cycling of inorganic compounds (nutrients) to the attention.

During the last 3 years, research, industry, authorities and civil society organizations cooperated to explore the opportunities for nutrient recovery and valorization from waste streams. At the BIOREFINE final conference you will be presented with project outcomes and testimonials from the sector, and invited to contribute to the closing discussion with an international expert panel. The conference will take place on September 2, 2015 in convention center 'Het Pand' in Ghent, Belgium.

A workshop "Circular approaches to phosphorus: from research to deployment" was held in Berlin on 4 March 2015. It brought together 28 nutrient recycling research and demonstration projects funded by the EU as well as nationally funded projects and industry initiatives. A comprehensive workshop-report has been published. You can find it on our website.

The second “UK Nutrient Platform” event was held at the Royal Society of Chemistry in London on the 29th April, attended by delegates from a range of industries as well as Government agencies, farming bodies and research partners.

Several European member states have local hotspots of intensive animal farming, and inevitable manure surpluses. Most of the times, these surpluses are transported across the country, or even exported, to avoid local overfertilization. However, manure, or digestate after co-digestion of manure, can be locally upgraded to interesting fertilising products, with higher nutrient efficiencies, and a better nitrogen/phosphorus ratio. Watch the video VCM, together with Inagro and UGent, made on innovative fertilising with manure.

After the successful first edition of the ManuREsource conference on manure management and valorization, the Organising Committee wants to continue their work on exchanging experiences and knowledge between European regions on effective policy measures dealing with manure surplus and innovations in manure treatment technologies.
